The power of intention, popularized by the late great Wayne Dyer, expresses itself in the biographies of many extraordinary people. In this post, I focus on the realized of intention of a once young baseball fan back in 1990s Los Angeles. His name is Giancarlo Stanton, a slugger currently playing for the Yankees. A prodigious home run hitter, Stanton could one day make it to the Hall of Fame.
His journey started as a little leaguer who used to go with his dad to Dodgers games in the 90s. They would sit in the outfield cheering hoping to catch some home run fly balls. It was during one of those games when the star-to-be turned to his father and announced that he would one day hit a ball out of Dodgers Stadium. Not just a home run, but clear out of the park, itself.
The Power of Intention Realized
It was May 12, 2015, five years into his Major League career when Stanton came up to bat in the first inning against Dodgers’ pitcher Mike Bolsinger. Winding up, the hurled threw an 85mph pitch towards the plate. Tracking it, Stanton swung and slammed a pop fly towards left field at 114mph. He hit the ball so hard the Dodgers’ left fielder didn’t even bother to move as it sailed over his head, the heads of all the fans in the bleachers, and bounced off the pavilion and into the parking lot. Stanton became only the fourth Major Leaguer ever to hit one out of the stadium, and it traveled 475.8′.
After the game, Stanton met up with his father outside the visiting team clubhouse. They giddily hugged each other, but the dream wouldn’t end there. Some years later Stanton was elected to the All Star team for the fifth time. The game was played in Dodgers’ Stadium. When Stanton came up to bath in the 5th inning, he launched a blast into the left-center field seats. This was the same section in which he made that prophecy to his father so many years earlier.
The Fruits of Intention
When we read the biographies of extraordinary people, we find a common thread. They use the power of intention to realize their dreams. This is true in the stories of countless stars from all walks of life. Consciously set intentions are like seeds planted the soil of the soul. The habits and action steps we take are the work required to bring them to fruition. Combined, they lead to a life worth living. This is what we focus on in our Live Teen Empowerment Class.
The opposite is what someone recently said to me. “I don’t like imagining my future because I don’t want to tempt fate.” Nothing could be more disempowering. Human beings are always creating whether we know it or not. Thought, itself, is creative, so there is no avoiding it. To avoid consciously intending one’s future is akin to scattering unknown seeds. Yet, this is what most people do, and is this what we wish to teach our youth?
The question is, “What do your children want in life, and how are you educating them towards being able to get it?”
