Archangel Michael Tames the Dragon on Michaelmas

A pale, yet warm, light glows in our garage this evening. The stars are coming earlier each night, and the air they bring grows crisper. The crop vines are withering from green to yellow to brittle brown. They’ve made their fruits, given them as gifts to the next generation, and now they’re passing from an impermanent world. Outer nature is turning inwards at Michaelmas.

What is it about this time of year that feels so magical? It is the revealing. The Dragon’s allure of sensuous summertime splendor is tamed, and we are no longer fooled. What lies beneath the surface is showing itself; for, when the noise of the world quiets, truth is seen.

The spiritual path looks for the light that shines out of the darkness, when sense pleasures alone cease to satisfy the soul’s longings. It is an autumn path, perpetually autumn until the light is born. That is why Michael, our champion, is the Archangel of Courage and why his Michaelmas Day always comes now. It is the beginning of fall.
